DECOR Travertino marmorin - the appearance of stone blocks

The TRAVERTIN technique allows us to approach the appearance of a stone where partial uneven parts and voids are visible on the surface and, locally, small holes in the relief can also be spotted. The surface is semi-gloss with visible traces of the pattern relief.

Technique "Travertin"
Preparation and manufacturing

Preparation of surface

  • Applying an undercoat: the surface should be dry, solid, without any oil stains and similar impurities. Ensure colour equality of the surface and apply an undercoat, if necessary, to achieve a uniform colour tone of the surface. Use white paint.
  • Smoothing the surface: with Jubolin filler (Jubolin, P25 or P50) using a stainless smoothing trowel.
  • Sanding the surface: removing dust particles by hoovering or a fine brush.
  • Impregnation: with Akril emulsion (1:1).

Manufacturing process

Application of Marmorin

With a smoothing trowel, the size of the processed surface is 0.5-1 m2. Coat thickness is ~2-3 mm. Marmorin must not dry up until pattern structure is formed.

Manufacture of the Marmorin structure

Use a decorative brush when the surface is still moist. By using the decorative brush, we create the appearance of a porous surface. Imprint a pattern of holes onto a still moist Marmorin with a decorative brush vertically to the surface and in horizontally curved strokes. The whole structure should not exceed 1/3 of the entire surface. Pattern density depends on the desired final picture.

Levelling of thickness

With a stainless smoothing trowel (gently) while the surface is still moist and when the material partly “tightens”. The surface absorbs a part of the liquid thus thickening the surface application of Marmorin. Smooth tips that are standing out of the surface flat and carefully not to fill too many holes and, at the same time, create spots on the surface with a smoothing trowel as a result of “sticking” between the smoothing trowel and Marmorin. There remain places (1/3 of the surface) where the smoothing trowel does not change the pattern structure.

By “cutting in” the surface of Marmorin. The surface should be touch dry and, at the same time, still soft. Mark longways and then vertically with a levelling moulding and the tools for cutting and cut in according to the marked pattern. After the surface has dried, deepen and mend the cuts with sandpaper marked by 100-150.

Application of Marmorin emulsion

Smooth the surface gently with a stainless smoothing trowel or a wide stainless trowel. The surface is partly matt with traces of gloss which can hardly be seen. Apply Marmorin emulsion with a synthetic cloth..
